A Unique Weather Source
AirNav’s REST-based ADS-B Derived Weather Data API enables aviation and meteorological service providers to seamlessly integrate real-time temperature and winds-aloft data into their applications. Wind speed, wind direction and temperature are derived in real time from ADS-B data broadcast by aircraft crossing our skies every day. This approach is possible because of AirNav’s space- and ground-based network of 55,000+ receivers, which capture over 11 billion transmissions daily.

Data Through ADS-B
Our weather data provides three parameters: wind speed, wind direction, and static air temperature. These values are rarely broadcast by ADS-B directly; instead, they are derived from aircraft state data in 1090ES messages, primarily Mode S Enhanced Surveillance (EHS) registers.
By combining Mach number, indicated airspeed (IAS), true airspeed (TAS), roll angle, and magnetic heading with ground track and ground speed, our models accurately reconstruct the wind vector and air temperature at the aircraft’s position and altitude. Where these parameters are available, updates arrive at approximately 1 Hz, comparable to positional data.
